Simeulue Island

Simeulue Island, an idyllic and small tropical island located 150km from mainland Sumatra, is a remote area of Indonesia within Aceh Province. Simeulue's landscape suffered a drastic change during the Boxing Day tsunami in 2004, raising West coast reefs 2 meters and destroying homes and infrastructure. Quickly following the tsunami was an influx of international attention, aid, and relief by non-profit organizations focused on rebuilding Simeulue and other areas of Aceh. However, the global attention and accompanying resources Aceh once received, has since evaporated.

Simeulue serves as Healthy Island's home, collaboratively housed at Mahi-Mahi Surf Resort - an all-inclusive and environmentally focused resort offering surf and yoga. Mahi-Mahi is a regional leader focusing on implementing sustainable Education, Health, and Organic Farming initiatives on Simeulue, in addition to researching and addressing the local needs of the island.
Key conservation initiatives on Simeulue include promoting responsible land-use planning, avoiding the loss of primary forests, transitioning the island to renewable energy sources, and preventing bird poaching and unsustainable fishing. Outside of Simeulue, Mahi-Mahi provides funding to HAkA, an Aceh conservation non-profit, to fund ranger's salaries in their turtle conservation program on Bangkaru Island.
